Project - 1204 Conveyor Bridge Sections
Introduction
The project was one of the highest single valued tasks undertaken by Fairwood Fabrications, being in excess of £300k, also one of the most critical. The work involved the removal of 6 No corroded elevated conveyor bridge sections and the fabrication and erection of new.
Details
1204 conveyor being essential in the steel making process, directly feeding materials to the Morfa Coke Ovens from the deep water harbour who in turn feed the Blast Furnaces, the planning and timing was of the highest priority and essential to the success of this project. The conveyor needed to be taken out of commission for a two-week period with only one slot being available between shipping schedules.
The 20tonne bridge sections were fabricated at our Port Talbot workshops and delivered to site prior to the planned start date. Preparatory work was carried out on the existing bridge sections whilst the conveyor was still in commission ensuring the sections could be lifted out with the minimum of problems.
Successes
With our site team working 24 hours a day and in tandem with Corus engineers ensured that the project was a complete success and was completed ahead of schedule.
We are currently in talks with Tata Steel who are planning to renew the next four sections.
